At Creative Class Studio, each month we spotlight a celebrated contemporary artist to inspire young creators. This month, we’re introducing kids to Brian Donnelly, AKA KAWS, one of the most globally recognized contemporary artists working today. He began as a graffiti artist in New York in the 1990s, altering advertisements in public spaces with his now-iconic characters.
Over time, his work moved from the streets into galleries, museums, and monumental public installations from the harbor in Hong Kong to public works in Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei. His larger-than-life sculptures attract global audiences, often drawing record-breaking attendance.
In this workshop, young artists receive their own collectible-style sculpture to transform into a one-of-a- I kind piece. Guided by our studio hosts, children explore color, pattern, and self-expression-learning how artists use form and surface to create visual impact. In his signature style with crossed-out eyes (his trademark) children will use acrylic paints, bold palettes, graphic motifs, or playful designs. The result is both a creative exercise and a finished object that feels gallery-worthy-something they are proud to display at home.
