For July at Creative Class Studio, each month we spotlight a celebrated artist to inspire young creators. This month, we’re exploring the vibrant world of Frida Kahlo -famous artist from Mexico known for her powerful self-portraits and her deep connection to nature and animals. She didn’t just paint animals—she lived with them! Her home, Casa Azul, was filled with monkeys, parrots, dogs, and even an eagle. But to Frida, these weren’t just pets—they were symbols, companions, and expressions of her soul.
Frida’s animals appeared in many of her paintings and were full of meaning.
- Monkeys – Symbolized the children and the comfort they gave her.
- Hummingbirds – Represented beauty, resilience, and sometimes pain.
- Dogs and parrots – Loyal friends and protectors.
- Eagles and cats – Strength, mystery, and pride.
She used these animals to tell the world how she felt—her joy, her struggles, and her Mexican heritage.
In this project, children will look in the mirror to create a self-portrait and include their favorite animal—not just as a pet, but as a symbol of personality, feelings, or dreams. Choose an animal that means something to you. Think about how that animal makes you feel.
Add background patterns, flowers, or colors inspired by Mexican art. Use bold lines, vibrant colors, and don’t forget Frida’s signature look: flowers in her hair, strong eyebrows, and deep emotion.
Let your child unbox these supplies and walk away to watch what magic they create. They can use the box as a platform to showcase their art.
Share their creation by tagging us on Instagram @creativeclassstudios. Come back for more creations, every month we will showcase a new artist.
